The Connswater Community Greenway was a £35 million investment in east Belfast that created a 9km linear park along the banks of the Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers.
Very much a community focused project, one that has been in development for over 15 years. The greenway has grown from humble beginnings into a transformative project but had never been through a formal branding process as the client was reluctant to change their initial, self-authored identity.
The development of the CCG brand involved an unusual and evolutionary approach that was the accumulation of many conversations, in many meetings, over many years about many different graphic projects; maps, guides, health campaigns, festivals, and even a jigsaw.
The final piece of the puzzle was the highest profile, and the most permanent; the naming and navigational signage.
For this we developed a graphic system based on a set of hand drawn symbols. These were commissioned from a local illustrator and reflected the natural, cultural and industrial heritage of the greenway.
The illustrations were combined with the de facto Connswater typeface - Stag - and rendered in the colours used for the map on the navigational blades. These and the other elements that make up the public face of the greenway have positioned the it as a fun, eclectic and mutable community project.
