From unpresumptuous beginnings in the east of the city, ‘the Belfast boy’ went on to become a global sports celebrity. This guide introduces fans to the people and places that shaped George in his formative years and gives a flavour of his life in east Belfast, before he hit the big time.

 

Working with the George Best Foundation and George’s sisters, we were kindly given access to the family archive which included school reports, family photographs and letters sent home when George was first at Old Trafford.

 

The guide also included a detailed map that helped fans navigate quite a large geographical area on foot, using public transport or by taxi.

 

We deliberately featured locations that either had a strong connection with George (the former family home) or engaged the senses (Desano’s ice cream parlour and Spence’s chip shop), or were experiential (seeing a game at The Oval football ground).
